GWANGJU ― A rented tourist bus fell down a cliff near Mount Jiri yesterday, killing five junior high school students and injuring 28 others in Gurye, South Jeolla.The bus carried 35 people, including the driver, a teacher and 33 first-year students of a junior high school in Suncheon. The bus careened out of control after overtaking another bus, police said.The bus struck a guard rail on the right side of the road before falling down a 25-meter (82-foot) cliff at 2:13 p.m., police said. The accident site, 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Seongsamjae, a rest stop for motorists on the mountain, is at a 70-degree elevation and known as a very dangerous area for driving, according to police. Among those hurt in the accident, six people, including the driver, identified only by his family name Kim, 41, sustained severe injuries. Another 22 were slightly injured.Most of the passengers were wearing safety belts at the time of accident, police said. A total of four buses, including the one that crashed, left the school for a field trip at 8:30 a.m., police said.The buses were heading to a nearby temple halfway up the mountain after visiting the peak, called Nogodan.
