Elementary Lesson Planning?
« on: September 10, 2010, 01:00:34 pm »
Hey everyone;

   Just a question I have to teach my first lesson on Monday and am not quite sure what I am doing.  The books they gave me have lessons done and you follow along but I can't find the materials to use and the co-teachers don't understand what I am asking.
   Do you have to do everything by the book, because I see other people have put up powerpoint presentations, can I make my own lesson using powerpoint as long as the expressions in the book are being used?

Most teachers are okay with you supplementing the book with PPT's and games.  But check with your coteachers as to what they want from you.

Every school(or even coteacher for that matter) is different in what the expect from their native teacher.  If you are pretty much doing the majority of teaching and lesson planning for the classes(which really is not how it's supposed to work), I would recommend combining some materials from the textbook...i.e. Look and Listens, Listen and Repeats, Let's Read, Let's Write with your own materials or some from this and other websites.  I would say my coteacher and I spend about 40% of the time using textbook and 60% using supplemental powerpoints , worksheets, and games not from the textbook.

The first few weeks are rough, but you will get in a groove and it will be better! Good Luck :)

thanks for the advice guys!  i think i was confused because for my grade 6's my co-teacher does all the planning and only lets me jump into the class.  and for grade 5 i teach all by myself but the kids loved my lesson so it went well!
