Converting .hwp to .doc and back!
« on: September 03, 2010, 08:34:59 am »
Hi everybody,

I'm relatively new to the whole "teaching in Korea thing," but things have been going pretty well so far  :)

That being said, I don't know how to convert .doc files to .hwp and vice versa, it's been giving my co-teacher and I a few headaches. Is there a simple way to do this? I work on a mac at home and use windows at school.

Thanks!

copy and paste the word document's contents to hwp, then save the document as an hwp file and vice versa for hwp to doc.

think that'll do the trick.

There is a converter that is on the microsoft site that allows you to convert files only if you are using word 2000 or later:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=FAF2FF5B-4055-49E9-8492-A23E2228BEC3&displaylang=KO

Hangul also has a viewer on their site too:
http://www.haansoft.com/hnc4_0/haansoft/download/pds.php?mode=read&tbl=haan01_pds&cpg=1&rspg=10&col=&str=&classid=25&no=172

Not sure how any of these work because I just stole the info from a blog that I found a few seconds ago

Such a pain. The easiest thing to do is do the conversion on your work computer. Copy and paste and save it as a .doc. Converting it just doesn't work.

The only problem is that the formatting that is used for lesson plans (with all the boxes and stuff) gets totally screwed up. So try to keep the formatting as simple as possible.

How do they not work? I find copy and pasting takes so much time, especially if you are converting a lesson plan and have to put stuff into individual tables.

The haansoft website has recently been merged with han.com I think it is, and I can't locate the downloadable viewer anywhere on the new site. I guess you might have to ask the 'IT' person in your school for a copy of hwp viewer for your home computer? BUT it needs to be one that you can actually make changes in if you need to. Not the 'free downloadable version' as I've found when I had that before reformatting that it was unable to do anything but view files.

Help please, So I have to write my lesson plan for the open class in HWP, which I dont have on my computer. I downloaded openoffice to try and open a hwp file in so that I could edit it but I don't know what to click when it asks for the filter selection, there is no HWP option. Do I need to download something else? Or am I just screwed for using HWP? Thanks

Does the hwp software have a .rtf extension?  Would that work?  I'm at home and can't check now.

You can save a .hwp file as a .doc file - just choose save as and then choose the bottom drop down box (under the fle name) - the .doc file is the bottom option I think. It also has a .rtf option if you find that keeps the formatting better. Open office will open both of these formats and you can save in the same format - don't save as an .odp file unless you have open office at school.

I have never tried converting a .doc file to a .hwp file but I am fairly sure that the Korean software will open the .doc files - it used to happen automatically on the school computer until I stopped it.

The big problem is you are using a Mac at home.  I do also.  If you want to put haansoft software on your Mac will have to install Windows 7 using boot camp or Parallels Desktop for Mac.  Unfortunately Korea is not very Mac friendly and the change that your school will have a Mac version of haansoft for you to install is going to be very slim.

@Janitor... that link for the microsoft site is in Korean.  I can't understand it to know what to download.  Do you know of that converter on the English site?

@Suzettec and others with this problem

The old website has been changed to a new one. There is no longer a download available from the new website. The version that was available from the old website was a viewer only, you couldn't do anything else with the program but view the files. You're better off asking your school if they have a mac version or if they can get a mac version so that you can be up to date with the rest of them.

Copy the document (should be Ctrl + A) and paste it into a word document.  That's what I do.

copy and paste.  If you can't do that, then open it at work in the hangul word processor program. It has a feature to save as a word document.  I don't know about the older version, but I believe 2007 and up can do it.

Do a save as. From the drop down list choose to save it as .doc.

This always work fine for me.

good news and bad news.

Good news, if you are a MAC user, Neo office apparently supports the hwp format, is entirely in English, and completely free.  Bad news, it's only for MAC. Sorry Winblows users.

If you're running 10.6+ you don't need to worry about using Windows on your Mac to at least use Hansoft's .hwp viewer program. Hancom Office Hanword Viewer 1.2 is available as a free download on the Mac App Store, and it's at a newer version than the app which they had for download on their website.

With respect to NeoOffice (and consequently OpenOffice) .hwp compatibility - from what I've read, only .hwp files made with Hangeul Word Processor 97 and earlier can be read and edited in OpenOffice (and NeoOffice, which is derived from OpenOffice). That compatibility broke with HWP 2002 and above...at my school at least, the computers run HWP 2007.

Oh, and just to clarify, NeoOffice isn't totally "free". The developers are asking for a small donation for the latest version (3.2.x), while the earlier version (3.1.x) is still available for a "free as in beer" download. (It is worth supporting them as they've put a crapload of effort into getting the OpenOffice codebase tweaked and optimized for OS X.)
