« on: August 30, 2010, 03:07:03 pm »
Hey everyone. just thought i would introduce myself. I'm an elementary teacher right in the centre of Daegu, and it's my first year teaching so any advice anyone could give me will be appreciated very much.

Talk to ye all soon hopefully.

Welcome, I've been teaching in Hong Cheon for approximately a year.  I hope you enjoy your time in South Korea.

That's what they say, but the last man who brought me up on it ended up on an island, 40 minutes ferry from the mainland.... Coincidence? I think not!

The Americans are getting more excited about my accent I think!

I'm not fighting the storm of those rumours anymore. I will probably just perpetuate them from this stage on!

I used to teach elementary for 3 years.  The biggest piece of advice is all about body language.  Make lots of eye-contact with the kids to show them you aren't nervous or intimidated but friendly and easy to talk to.  Smile and enjoy their company.  That's outside of class.  Inside of class, let the students know you can be stern when it's time to get down to business.

Also, take their things and pretend that you are about to eat it!  Pencils, books, cel-phones!  It's a riot!  Their reactions are so cute!

Ah the good old "pretend to eat", I must have been quite fond of it myself when I was younger. However I'm not sure 6th graders will be so happy about such carry on, what with half of them basically being middle schoolers!
