TOP 5 & Top 5 Christmas
« on: August 26, 2010, 09:17:45 am »
I found this on EFL classroom (http://eflclassroom.ning.com/resources/topics/top-5-the-most-popular-game) and played it with a class this morning.

It was AWESOME!  You play it just like the Family Feud of old...a 1, 000 people were surveyed and these were the top 5 answers.  Rules and teacher tips are in the powerpoint.  He also has numerous versions of game available for download.

I've uploaded a revised version as the one from EFL did not have the right speaker notes.  I also made a copy of all the answers as speaker notes did not work on the classroom computer and lastly I added a side 2 to the score sheet as my class went 8 rounds.

Have fun with it!

This was, hands down, the best lesson I did all year. Every one of my classes loved it and all the students participated. I didn't even have one student sleep for the entire week!  I used it for all 3 MS grade levels with success.

Thank you Sonya for posting this!   :D

Anyone know how "up-to-date" the Kpop category would be?  Alas!  I still know nothing about k-pop except for that "Madonna-donna" song.

This game just got me in trouble with my principal...hahaha. I used it with one of my classes as the last lesson before Chuseok. This particular class is one of my toughest...absolutely NO participation. I have to more or less drag them out of their seats to answer questions. This time, they got so into the game and made so much noise that they woke up the principal, who came upstairs to see what was going on... What an awesome game, but next time I have to make sure I lay down the "quiet celebrations" rule at the beginning...

I've been using this game with my classes today and they LOVE it.  It gets everybody's attention, and the kids who normally sit in the back sleeping were the loudest for once.  It was like a Chuseok miracle :P  I showed a clip of Family Feud from youtube at the start of the class and they loved that.  When I said this is the game we're going to be playing, they settled down right away and said, "OK Start teacher!"  Two of my co-teachers have asked me for it so they can use it in other classes.  Thanks so much for posting this!

Any game that wakes the principal must be a great game!

my 3rd grade middle schoolers are loving this game this week! it's also similar to 'family fortunes' shown in Ireland and the UK. only getting through about 1/2 the questions per class so will be able to use it again before Christmas.

The speaker notes were different from the main page on a couple of items, so here is the revised list.

This worked well with my after school class (I teach at a middle school). I added a prize of candy and that seemed to add to the motivation. Well, to the students who paid attention. ^^;; Even those who didn't pay attention to the end prize spoke out more. Some categories were easy for them but others were more challenging. Definitely a good game for even low level students these allows them to speak out basic vocabulary. If they didn't know what to guess, I would give them hints, by acting something out or tell them how many letters were in the word.

Great game, thanks... I'll have to change a few answers to suit their levels but its going to work perfect...
Apart from jeopardy, does anyone know other games out there for very low level students.
