Summer Rhymes Crossword Puzzle
« on: August 25, 2010, 01:28:36 pm »
I used this with the first page of my "Summer Poets" lesson (posted on waygook, sometime last year), because I didn't want to collect and mark the poems from the original lesson. Put the cloze activity and this puzzle together though and you have a nice easy, back-to-school lesson. High School or Middle School appropriate.

I was surprised that very few of my students understood what "Rhyme" really meant, and when I asked for words that rhymed with "hat" in my example I often got answers like "hit" "head" "high", so I did a few more simple examples to illustrate that the rhyme comes from the last "sound" of the word, particularly the last vowel-consant sound.

Also, in the puzzle there is a block for the space in ice_cream.

I too found that my high schoolers really don't have an ear for rhyme. I did a multiple choice cloze exercise where they had to finish the lyrics of some songs. I thought it would be easy but they found it damn near impossible.
