"Twilight" English Book Club - Summer Camp
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:56:41 pm »
This summer I was told I had to hold summer camp for 15 days. Rather than try to come up with a new topic everyday for 15 days, I chose to have the students read a novel across the course of the camp and on the last day we watched the movie. Overall, the camp was a big success. The girls tackled the novel with a lot of determination, even if they struggled to keep up with the pace of reading.

I had the girls read the book at night as homework, and gave them comprehension questions to go with their assigned reading. I encouraged them that it was ok if they couldn't understand every single word, the goal was to understand what was happening in the story.

I'll post my worksheets/powerpoints here, you're welcome to use them if you've got a genius class or adult class that would enjoy it!

Previous post is the Comprehension Questions for the book. I'm limited in how many attachments I can post, I'll try to keep everything in order. I know one of my ppt's didn't save properly and may just be a double of another lesson, so I apologize for that missing chapter.

More files, working our way through the book. As we started moving through the book faster, most of my classes didn't require a work sheet, we would spend the whole class time reviewing the questions and talking about what happened.

ALSO! I would have the students underline JUST the dialogue from important conversations and I would often read one character and they would read the other. Highlighting the DIALOGUE helped students who would get confused or overwhelmed by Meyer's long descriptions.

Hi!  I like the idea of a reading/discussion camp, but I have a few questions.

-Did every student have a copy of the book?  How?
-Did you ask them to underline unknown words, keep a vocab diary, etc?
-Did you practice or give them any reading strategies to do each night?  That is something I would probably focus on if I were to do this.  A great way to try out reading strategies to help make the text more comprehensible.

I believe lisadream was a high school teacher when she was here, so I would guess this camp was geared toward her high school girls.
