Elementary 3rd and 4th 'Travel the World' camp
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:07:02 am »
This 3rd and 4th grade elementary summer camp was for 5 days for 1hr and 20min each day.
I borrowed many ideas/games/materials from this site and other places around the internet.  Thanks to all those who posted their stuff so I could 'borrow' it.

Here's the basic run down:
Day 1: Balloon popping intro, Make a passport, present passport
Day 2: Korea and North America 20min PPT, 6 games rotated every 10 minutes (Duck Duck Goose, Hopscotch, Red light green light, Taekwondo please game, black flag white flag, and a word search)
Day 3: Brazil and India 20min PPT, 6 games rotated every 10 min (Everybody wearing..., Amazon slap n' say, Whisper game, Yoga please game, Tea party memory game, and Kokli Chipaki)
Day 4: Italy and Spain 20min PPT, 6 games rotated every 10 min (Make a pizza, On the road to Rome, Fountain game, Soccer please game, Country coloring and La Semana)
Day 5: Treasure Hunt

The games are supposed to be related to the countries they learned about that day.  For example Kokli Chipaki is a game played by children in India.
Also, I had 37 students in 3rd grade, so I split the class into 2 teams and had the Korean teacher run half the games.  But for a smaller camp you can easily do it as one big group.
The stamps were made from erasers.  They looked cool and were fun to make.
I begged my co-teacher to buy ice cream for all the students as the treasure at the end of the treasure hunt.  They were hot and tired, and ice cream was the perfect ending to the camp.

Lastly, the kids absolutely loved the camp.  They especially loved Duck duck goose, red light green light, Soccer please game, and the treasure hunt.  They didn't like the Fountain game, Tea party memory game, or La Semana.

[Update - I've attached the pictures I used to make the stamps in reply#13.]

[Update 2 - Game instructions are in the first attachment of this post for 3rd and 4th grade (above the pictures), and in reply#2 for 5th and 6th grade.

Whoops, I forgot to post the materials.  Also, I'm doing this same camp for 5th and 6th grade right now, and it's going pretty well.  I changed many of the games to their level.
I've attached the lesson plan for 5th and 6th grade along with all the materials I used.

Here's another copy of the Italy PPT for whoever it wasn't working for.

@rgracevn the "Please" game is just like Simon Says.  First I spend 2 or 3 minutes teaching them new words.  Usually no more than five.  Such as upper cut, low kick, high kick, roundhouse, jab... etc.  Then we go through a practice round.  Then we play and whoever doesn't mess up gets a stamp.

This is amazing! Such a good idea! I had a quick question, how exactly would I make the stamps from erasers?

So fantastic!  Thank you for posting this!!!  As I consider last year, when I was inexperienced and stabbing in the dark for materials for my winter/summer camps, I praise the powers that be for giving us waygooks Waygook and smart, tech-savvy teachers who generously share their brilliant ideas!

May you live long and prosper!

Here's something that might be helpful to everyone doing an Around the World theme for elementary students. I'm attaching a pdf file of children's games around the world. Many can be modified to practice English. Some of the ones I will be using are: How Many, Little Parrot, Hana Hana Hana Kuchi.

To make eraser stamps you need:

- thick eraser (enough to cut a mold and still grab the edges without getting ink on your fingers.)
- retractable blade thingy (don't know what it's called, but they're everywhere here)
- drawing talent or better yet a print out of the design you want to use.  If you want words on your stamp, then printing out a design is necessary.  The words will have to be backwards on the stamp.
-ink pad

With a pencil trace over the design you printed out.  Put the paper over the eraser and rub it in really well.  You want the pencil lead to make a print on the eraser.

Then, use your retractable blade to cut around the design.  If you want to get really detailed use a pin head.

I think the kids got really lucky that I was inspired to do all this.  Normally I would have just bought some stamps.

Thanks for all the ideas. I have used and adapted some of the powerpoints that I have found on here. They may/may not be useful for anyone else. My camps were 1.5 hours long for 3rd grade and then i used the same lesson for 4th grade.

Everyday i played different icebreaker games I found that some days I had over/under estimated my time so was always prepared with games to fill the time.

I have attached some of the materials that I have used as well.

Day 1 - Introductions to each other, classroom rules and the topic of around the world. Activities*** icebreaker game, vocabulary sheet (to be added to over the course of the week), four corners game, colouring continents map and making a passport.

Day 2 - Korea and Australia
Activities*** I used this website for worksheets
http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/free_printables.htm

Day 3 - Africa
Activities*** http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/africa/

Day 4 - continued and finished crafts from yesterday (only 1.5. hour lessons)

Day 5 - England + English birthday party + games
Activities****** Pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey, Winner gets to blow out the candles on the birthday cake,  watched Mr Bean whilst eating party food.

I have recently posted a Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego themed game template.  Would suit this lesson really well I think.  Cool theme.

WOW well done. Definitely like some of the activities and may use them with a few alterations. :)
Your lesson plans are also impeccably detailed, your school is definitely lucky to have you.
