Hi guys,

Wanted to let you know about a cool opportunity to have your writing/photography/tips and opinions put out there for the world to see, on a brand new Korean travel website!

Basically, the site is an English guide to South Korea (for teachers and non-teachers), and will initially focus on travel timetables (that's right - we are putting bus and train timetables all online finally!!!!), maps, and loads of general help and advice on the different towns and attractions here.  It is specialising in Gangwon-do at first, as that's where we are based, and the aim is for it to include as much information as possible about all of the different towns in the province, where people may end up being placed if they come to Korea to teach.  We also want to quickly expand it to include all other cities and provinces in Korea.

Because there is no-one better to tell people about a town than the people who actually live there, the forum is being opened up to us teachers. If you are at all interested in writing, and want something to put on your CV, or you are just happy to help out people who have just arrived/have yet to arrive in Korea, then go ahead and submit your top tips for your town and really put it on the map! The site is also looking for photographs - both mundane snaps of restaurant fronts, street views, locations of amenities etc.; as well as creative examples of your own photography, showcasing the area at it's best.

What you get:

- Your work displayed on what looks set to be the biggest English travel resource website in Korea
- All pictures and text credited to you on said site
- The right to keep the original rights to your photographs, and the right to ask for their removal from the site at any time
- A credit on your CV
- The chance to practice your writing and photography skills
- And - the most important one, I think - the chance to help out others. I don't know about you, but I remember the apprehension I had when I first arrived in my town, knowing nothing about the place, or how to get out of it!!  It was nigh on impossible to find anything on Google relating to any of the smaller areas in South Korea. I think it'd be awesome if people could start arriving here already knowing a lot about the area they were going to - and wouldn't it be awesome if you knew you'd helped to create that??

Anyway, the things that are needed about each town are: Location, size, population, amenities and attractions, close-by towns/areas/attractions, bus/rail station information, festival information (if any), nightlife, recommended restaurants and bars, exercise info (gym, pool, classes, running routes/tracks, etc), town’s history and what it’s famous for (if anything), school information for people teaching here.

If you have any bus or train timetables for the town, then PLEASE feel free to include those too!

Any tiny pieces of writing would be appreciated - even just a couple of things from the above list. The plan is to keep building and continuously add new ideas.

Please feel free to pass this onto anyone at all that you think might be interested.  We've already had tons of submissions and are very excited!  There will soon be a facebook group online too.

To submit some information, or for an example of some submissions we've already had,  drop me an email at dicarlo.claire@gmail.com

Any questions are welcomed too.

Thanks guys!

Claire (site co-creator)

THE SITE IS LIVE!!!!

Hi everyone – the site which is described in the above post is now
online!

The information can be found at www.thesouthkoreatravelguide.com

At the moment, the site includes travel information for Gangwon-do
only. However, we have already received submissions from teachers
living in other provinces, and will be adding those in very soon!

Please have a look through the site, let us know what you
think, and if you feel you could add anything to it, then please
get in touch at contributions@thesouthkoreatravelguide.com

You can also keep track of our updates on Facebook by ‘liking’ our
official page at

Korea-Travel-Guide/132541650112169?v=wall&ref=ts

or searching for ‘the south korea travel guide’.

We will be adding to and updating the site almost every day – please
pass on the domain name to anyone you think may find it useful, and
help us to grow it into a very useful resource for Westerners all over
Korea!

Thanks for all your support thus far everyone :-)

Thanks so much!!  That would be awesome :-)

If just one or two people from each town send in something, then we'll all be able to benefit from a site that covers all of Korea.

Thanks for all the support so far - there have only been 2 of us putting this site together - and we both work full time too!  So it's been a challenge at times!  It's all self financed too, so we're so hoping everyone finds it of use.

This is awesome! Bus times so helpful, plus this weekend the travel line did not quote a time that was on your site so I took a chance and your times were spot on!!

Thanks so much!

What a godsend!  Sometimes the Seoul-Korean Info hotline is too busy to take calls, and on some unlucky days, they don't have anyone who can speak english   ???(but that rarely happens!)  It's so great too have a new resource for the expat community!  Thank you^billionth power  ;D

It's so great to get all your positive feedback guys - makes all the hard work worthwhile!  Look forward to seeing you info on Jeollabukdo too :-)

We're receiving submissions every day now so please bear with us while we put it all together - but we're hopefully aiming to get lots of other provinces online throughout the next month.

Thanks again for all the suppport!!

I sent in some links I pulled from Brian's posting on Jeollanamdo bus schedules last year. I did warn them that almost all of them are dead but salvageable because the city websites have an annoying habit of completely botching updates. I've never heard of websites that have to change their address just to update 2 or 3 lines of text in the html file.
I am curious as to how they will deal with schedule updates- are they gonna check every website every week, or have an rss filter scan thru it for change, or signup on the websites for schedule changes? I wouldn't want to show up at 10pm, only to find out the last bus back left at 9:50pm...

Usquare is still buggy as hell, but at least the from/to selection process is a little better.

I believe 02-1330 is the info line for Seoul.
