Summer camp working hours
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:01:48 am »
I'm with GEPIK and for winter camp I only had to work 4hours but I just got a message fromy CO-T that for summer camp I'll have to work the full 8hours. Does anyone have to do this too? I remember signing a paper during winter camp that somewhere on the contract, we're only suppose to work 4-5hours? is this right? I need some clarification..

I also need some clarification on this too. My school have completely shafted me. Making me do four weeks of summer camp, and making me stay for the full 8 hours every day.

For the camps, during the previous years they were not strict about staying all 8 hrs, which we are required to stay.  This year, supposedly due to some teachers causing some trouble after they were released early, we all have to abide to stay the 8 hrs.

So what you're saying is...  you have to work 8 hours a day, five days a week when you're not on your vacation leave?  Sounds almost like a job.

Hahahah..... very good point. But I can understand some people complaining if they know other people who get to work 4-5 hour days. Oh well... them's the breaks. I will be doing a 4 week camp as well with 8 hour days. Come Winter break I'll be owed 3 weeks of vacation.

I did 4 weeks of winter camp in February 8 hrs everyday and had to warm my seat for the week in between Christmas and New Years, it really all depends on your school and local Office of Education. I used to be able to take 2 or 3 hour lunches if I had to be here, but now I have to sign out if I want to leave for my lunch break.

Everyone will always compare their own situation to others', that is human nature. andiaugqzzzzzz, yes they are the same as normal working hours, but when you know people who are on the same contracts are getting better deals, and when the school tell you that you can go home at lunch a week ago only to change their mind today, it is easy to see why people get pissed off.

Nobody needs a goody know it all andiauzzzzzz.

We've always had to stay to the last minute, regardless of the situation.

Even on the day before Chusok when ALL the korean teachers left early, we had to stay till 4:40.
Even right before break when there was a big lunch with plenty of soju and beer provided, we were expected to come BACK to school, and warm our chairs for an hour. All through winter break, no camps, no students, no other teachers, just the english department in a freezing building.

Lucky ducks who get to go home early and/or "work from home"!  We shouldn't complain, because then the few lucky ones might have their benefits taken away, and who does that help?

I was told to come in this week even though I have nothing to do. Then at 12.30 I was told I could go home. It seems no one really knows what we should be doing when there is no work for us.

Summer camp in the morning, 9h-12h30 and then again in the afternoon, 1h-4h30...
So 7 hours a day.. That means you teach 2 days worth of camps in one day.. and score if you want more days for vacation...

It all depends on your school.  You can't compare your school to another.  My EPIK contract states I am to work 8 hours.  For summer school this week, I work 9-12:20, and then I go home.   Starting next week,  we have something called summer school where I work from 9 to 3:30.  After that I go home.  Then I have summer vacation.

It just depends on the school.

I also think it depends on your school. My contract states that I have to work for 8 hours, but today my co told me that I can go home after summer camp.

@andiusaugustus thanks for the clarification.. LOL.. :P I know I know I know.. it's a job. It's just during winter vaca I went home at 12... so it just sucks because I have family coming and they're going to have to sit all day and wait for me. My school is pretty good, but it's prob the few that got in trouble that now we all have to stay here for the full 8. Oy.....thanks everyone!  :-*

@andiusaugustus you are right, but it is hard to say "yeah! we've got it good" when you are alone in your school for 8 pointless hours and everyone else is at home enjoying themselves. Yes, they could be doing something much harder like planting trees in a mine field but I think the posters here have a point that it is pointless and a misappropriation of labor.

Like someone said before, it's all up to the provincial office of education of your area. And then generally if you are in a big school, your administration department won't cut any corners for anyone so you and everybody else gotta stick by the rules set. Some smaller schools seem to receive less scrutiny from the POE and thus they can allow their staff to get away with more. Most of the time, nobody is trying to shaft you on purpose.
