Boryeong Mud Festival/보령머드축제
« on: May 10, 2010, 02:07:36 pm »
The time of the year for one of Korea's most popular summer festivals is quickly approaching, and I thought what better place to mention it than here? The Boryeong Mud Festival (see LP "Korea", 8th ed., boxed text pg. 332 if you have it) will be running from July 17th until July 25th this year, moved to the second and third week of July, presumably to avoid the bad weather that happened during the first week last year.

The festival takes place at Daecheon Beach, one of the nicest beaches in Korea (in my opinion). While the festival itself trucks in the slightly-watered down gray mud into bins, slides, mud wrestling pits and other contraptions to the beach front, if you go with an organization like Adventure Korea (http://www.adventurekorea.com), it's possible to participate in either "extreme mud training" (the first weekend, July 17th~18th) or the "mud marathon" (the second weekend, July 24th~25th).

Because the festival is so popular, accommodations in and around Boryeong are already booking quickly. If you'll be in Korea at that time, and think you want to play in the mud, you should be making your plans now!

Trips for only 75,000KRW (including transportation, accommodation, and "mud training") are already posted here: http://www.adventurekorea.com/ouradventure/calendar_content.asp?id=calendar&RowNo=489 and http://www.adventurekorea.com/ouradventure/calendar_content.asp?id=calendar&RowNo=490

ditto.  Would love to know about the feasibility of either pitching a tent or sleeping in the car.

I do know that people have slept on the beach. Whether camping with tents is officially permitted, I'm not sure. I suppose the best bet would be to have a look at the Boryeong Mud Festival website, although the English version is from last year.

Hi,

Does anybody know the best way to Mudfest? I already have accomodation, just need to figure out how I will be getting there. I'd like to leave after 8pm on Friday. I'm in Bundang. I can't seem to find the bus from express bus terminal and dong seoul doesn't have a bus that leaves after 8pm. anybody know about the train?

Catch the train to Daecheon Station. Its close to the mudfestival location (Dacheon beach). Train is slightly more expensive but should be quicker, especially with traffic, although on friday night you should be safe either way.

I'm planning on visiting the mud festival but staying in a different beach town. I'm not in it for the drinking so I'm hoping to get there early morning before the tour buses and head south early evening before it gets out of hand. If anyone knows a good place around Seocheon or so, recommendations would be appreciated.

The train leaves from Yongsan and is only like $12 one way.  I went last weekend.  I would have a Korean help you book tickets though, because it will probably be only standing left if you just show up.  Since it is a 2 1/2 to 3 hour train ride, that can be really hard.

Hey

I have transport covered but not accommodation. Do you know if there are many jim-jil-bangs near the beach area? If not I think I'll have to crash on a friends floor (Beach is also another option)

For Boryeong Mud Festival 2011, July 16h weekend:
If you live in Busan and are looking to travel there, Wink (formerly Discover Korea) is trying to see if there's enough interest to get a bus leaving from there to the festival: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=213389462026595

This page, about the original bus departing from Seoul has more details:

Last year we just arrived early and got a love motel right on the beach. However, I heard people later in the day complaining that all the rooms were booked so if you're going independently you should probably head up Friday night or super early Saturday!

Word of warning...

If you're either

over 30 and no longer in the college days mentality

embarrased or easily upset over seeing other waeygs doing extremely embarrassing / rude / offensive / cringeworthy things whilst Koreans are waching...

Skip it.

Or get a private pension / minbak with good friends.

What's the nuttiest / naughtiest thing anyone has ever seen people do at mudfest??

If your favorite thing to do in Korea is pretend you're not in Korea, then this is the festival for you.

I used to see it as thousands of drunken foreigners and students, confused families and hundreds of media voyeurs and perverts with cameras looking to document all the drunken debauchery.  Last year, they moved the main venue way down the beach.  They are adding more and more cops, lines and fences every year and turning a festival that was very unique for Korea in to something that's just another crowded expensive weekend at the beach with a little mud.  If you want to go and act stupid, please tell people you are an exchange student or tourist from a former colony that no longer exists in name..

Can I ask how some of you have booked your accommodations and how much it's costing you? I'm not planning on going with a tour group or book in with the mudfest guys but I'm hoping to have my accommodations booked before arriving...

I went to the Mud festival last year. Personally, I was VERY let down by the festival. Maybe my expectations were too high, but the actual 'mud area' was very small and the festival itself was almost non-existent. I would never go back to that festival.

P.S. full disclosure, I got VERY SICK, so that effects my overall opinion of the festival.

Hey everyone,

I want to let you know that I'm organizing a trip to the Boryeong Mud Festival for the first weekend (July 16th-17th), and we have plenty of space left. We're a non-profit group, so our prices are very cheap (starting at 45,000 won). Prices include accommodation (1-2 minutes walk from the mud action), round-trip transportation via chartered bus, and a rooftop bbq party. Come get muddy with us!

Hey guys!

Where did you sleep at the mudfest?  I want to go soon (not for the fest, duh! just to boryeong area) and need a place to sleep. Preferably nice :) and on the beach :)
