How to Upload/Download Files
« on: September 20, 2006, 09:25:51 am »
I am going to develop a FAQ section for this site, in case people start having problems using the site, or are unaware of some of the features available.  Please ask your questions regarding features here.

Notice: You MUST be logged in to download or even see the little paperclip for attachments.

Firstly, I want to let you all know that you can upload files in your posts.  The way to do this is by clicking "Additional Options" when you reply to a post or create a new topic.  It should appear right above your "Post", "Preview", and "Spell Check" buttons when you're typing something in the forums.

Here is an example of an uploaded file, you should see it at the bottom of my post (normally the big arrow isn't there, it's for demonstration purposes only):

p.s.  You can also upload images, movies, ect...

I'm using Safari on a mac and the attachment appears as a paperclip icon on the very right of the post.

I've just noticed that you cannot upload many mac formats as attachments. Is there a special reason for this and/or a way you can change it to allow more formats? I would be surprised if no-one else is using a mac!

Thanks

Which formats? let me know and I'll add them ASAP to the attachment config.  I have a mac, but I guess I haven't uploaded much other than docs and ppt.

If you can let me know the extension types, for example .docx  , then I'll add accordingly.  The few type of extensions I won't allow are exe, or even zip.  Don't want to risk anyone getting a nasty virus.

The only type I would like to upload is .key
Of course you can open .ppt in Keynote but with the Jeopardy games especially there are compatibility issues.
Thanks

I've just added the .key extension to the attachment configuration.  If you can, I would export to ppt or let people know that the keynote you upload is only readable by apple's keynote program.

Thanks bleakronnie.

Hi!

Sorry if I'm being stupid, but I'm trying to download a file that's attached to one of the messages and when I click on the paperclip or on the message heading nothing happens.

I'm logged in, I'm using a mac....

Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?!

Thanks!

Hi Webmaster

It seems to be ok on the PC I use at school which is good news! If it doesn't work on my mac at home again I'll contact you again to let you know.

Thanks!

I have a problem downloading attachments with Firefox 3.6.12

Everything downloads as 'index.php'.  I can rename them to the proper file extension and they work fine, but it's a hassle if I'm downloading a lot of files at once.

Oddly, my portable firefox downloads everything fine.

That's rather odd, I just tested Firefox 3.6.12 on my mac, and works normally.

Are you clicking on the file, or right clicking to do a "save target" or something along those lines?   Try right clicking and choosing a normal option (could be something with your settings), so if you're on a mac you would right click and choose: "Open Link ... "  instead of clicking on "Download linked File ..." which would cause you to grab it and named as index.php

I was just clicking on the attachment and letting Firefox automatically download it, right click>save target as... downloads the file normally.

Still odd that my usual method should work with portable firefox but not a properly installed version.

Any chance of getting .ttf files (i.e. fonts) enabled as a possible attachment? I have a lot of stuff for a harry potter camp which I've used two special harry potter style fonts in, I'd like to put everything needed for the camp up together. Also I get fed up when I download something and I have to resize everything because its been done in a font that isn't installed on my computer.

I know you can embed some fonts in ppt's but a lot of fonts seem to prevent you from doing that :(

Hello, would you be kind enough Web Master, to explain step-by-step how to upload a file please? I don't want to add to someone else's post, I would like to start my own post (like the ones you see on the LHS on the homepage at the top).
Cheers! And Merry Christmas...

When you are posting, use the additional options... button, and from there you will see the option to upload a file.

Porko:
Hi there,  as Daejeon mentioned, it's just the link bellow the "message box" you type your stuff into.  It shows up as "+ Additional Options", and you can add as many files as you want, but there is a file size limit.

Daejon:
I'm not sure why the need for zip?  I can add ttf if you think it would be helpful, but zips make it hard for moderators to track the types of files that are uploaded without downloading the files themselves and extracting/viewing.

Just the templates I am making often require those on different versions of powerpoint to myself to have the fonts installed.  Apparently draggin' and droppin' these fonts is quite difficult for some, so having the PPT and TTF in the same zip/rar would make it easier.  Anyway, having the ability to upload TTF would be equally as acceptable.

I would also like the options for zips to be uploaded, particularly in the camps forum (I don't know eather it is possible to to enable only for some forums in simple machines)

I can see why the mods might not like it, but it would be useful for camps.

I second this-- being able to upload .zip (and .rar).
