Short Day Camp - Birthday Party Theme
« on: July 09, 2010, 03:15:25 pm »
Hello ^^

I just finished this so it's probably not perfect. I have a short day camp for Elementary Grade's 3-4 and 5-6. (I'm hoping to use the same general plan and just increase the difficulty of the worksheets for the higher grades).

I don't think our students have birthday parties like we did when we were their age, so I wanted them to experience one (also, provides an excuse to play games ^^).

To get them interested I'm going to use Mr. Bean:

On the worksheet, I'll have gr. 3 and 4 circle the items they see in the video. Grades 5-6 can write the words first, then circle what they see. This vocabulary can later be used to fill out the party invitation.

Next, I'm going to show a simple ppt showing (from what I can remember) how to have a birthday party. (I included the calendar so that students can see what day of the week their birthday lands on this year)

The first activity will be to have the students make invitations. It takes about 2 minutes to make templates at www.123printcards.com. (Substitute information with "Date:____________________" etc. so students can write their own). Higher levels can include what they will eat and do. (Use the handout for vocab.)

Next, play games for as long as you'd like (it's camp, right?!). Joss posted a GREAT list on this forum under "camp games".

Next, sing Happy Birthday and if it's in your budget have a cake with candles or icecream.

Finish it up with treat bags. I'm going to see if I can have a selection of candy/small toys, each student will make/decorate one, and then pass it along to someone else "Happy Birthday! This is for you!" or "Thank you for coming to my party"
