JLP Summer Vacation details from Chris Devison
« on: March 22, 2010, 08:32:09 am »
I emailed Chris Devison some questions about summer vacation and thought others might be interested in his answers.

Q: What's the deal with our 7 day vacation in August? Are the dates totally up to the schools and teachers to agree upon or are there specific days when we can or can't take vacation? Such as, would it be possible to take them at the end of the contract and leave Korea 7 days early? Also, does 7 days vacation mean 7 weekdays or does it mean 7 weekdays/weekends?

A: Can't do it at the end sorry.  7 days includes the weekends.  However, unlike winter vacation when school is out you don't desk warm or have camps or anything else.  You are free, you just have to bum around Korea before going home.

- Chris Devison

Disclaimer: I know it's 5 months early and a lot might change by then (especially in the week before vacation, Korea style), but this brightened my summer outlook and it might help yours as well.

Am I to understand they don't do summer camps?

I thought we would have to, but Chris's email says otherwise. In the past they made NET's do summer camps, maybe this is a new policy?

From what I understand, schools that want summer camps may still asked their NEST teachers do to them, but recently camp position have also been filled by recruiting companies who bring foreigners over for one or two weeks as "volunteers". The foreigners aren't paid, but their flight is free, so I'm not really sure if anybody saves money this way. I don't know if that is what is happening with everyone, I just heard about it happening last year. My school doesn't do summer camps, never has, but I work at a high school.

I was recently told my school district would be both having summer camps and making us desk warm. Unless you have a cool supervisor in your area, don't count on extra vacation.
