How do you buy hot chilli?
« on: September 13, 2017, 10:53:16 PM »
I keep buying tame chili peppers that have no kick.

Is there a word or label to recognize which chillis are hot vs the non-spicy ones?
Catch my drift?

The green ones tend to be hotter than the red ones.

I just take my chances.

I think what you're looking for are the cheong-yang gochu (청양 고추).

Cheongyang peppers are the closest thing to "hot" peppers here.

Whoever made that blog missed the number 1 reason peppers were readily adopted in Korea: they helped preserve the kimchi through the winter months better than the method used before. It was a matter of survival, and they did the trick.
