are you saying that the development of korea is 200 years behind that of the US?

and who's fault is it exactly that it took koreans took so long to get their ass in gear and actually develop the country? and all that development was done via massive foreign hand-outs, i might add.

I don't know if you can really call it a "fault". Up until 1945 and indeed for some time after, much of the world operated on a colonialist-mercantilist system. Isolated as it was from much of global trade and lacking in natural resources, its little surprise that Korea was not an economic dynamo until the advent of technology enabled such things.Since then it has rapidly accelerated. To Korea's credit they took the foreign aid, put it to good use, and have now eclipsed other countries that were at one time "great". Look back in time and pretty much every country on Earth has received some kind of outside aid and development at some point.

In many ways they are still behind. In some ways they have surpassed us. For example, Korea has seen the importation of two foreign religions that each converted about 20% of the population and did not descend into a bloodbath, unlike virtually every other nation on Earth. It has seen the election of a Buddhist, an Atheist, a Catholic, and a Protestant. That's rather remarkable. Do you think that would fly with us? The United States would probably descend into civil war if an openly Muslim or Buddhist president took office.

Yes, they had foreign aid. And?
What BS. Koreans martyred Catholic missionaries.

Korea had hundreds of years to develop a strong national economy and defense. It did neither.

The number of dead is estimated at 8,000. Compared to pretty much every nation on Earth, that has to be a record low for sectarian violence given the degree to which people joined the new religion. Combine that with the elections of the presidents of different religions and its clear that South Korea has one of the best records of religious tolerance in the world.

And again, it was on the ass end of global trade and had little contact with the rest of the world. Combine that with almost no natural resources and the results were inevitable. In fact, in terms of geographic isolation and lack of resources, there probably isn't a country in the world that has done better than Korea.

Errrr..... Japan

Japan had  greater population, greater arable land, and wasn't vulnerable to overland invasion. You can certainly make a case for Japan that despite its relative advantages, its greater level of success makes them best, in which case Korea is likely number 2, still not a bad showing. It also was a target of foreign trade to a much greater degree than Korea.

Do you think there's a branch of Korean Confucianism that specializes in making excuses for inaction and non-achievement and that dm/sr is its current leader?

But carry on with your false, unsubstantiated claims.

I love how everybody rags on Korea, a country that has only been developed for 40 years.  Try taking a peek back to what the USA looked like in 1816 and get back to me.

are you saying that the development of korea is 200 years behind that of the US?

and who's fault is it exactly that it took koreans took so long to get their ass in gear and actually develop the country? and all that development was done via massive foreign hand-outs, i might add.

How about I come to your house and ravage it once a week...how nice are you going to make it look?  Sure Korea wasn't ravaged once a week, but we are talking about a whole country, not a house.  And I'm not saying the development of Korea is 200 years behind the US.  What I am saying is it's way further along than the USA was at 40 years old (and not talking anything about technology).
