Anyone here used to post on Dave's?
« on: June 17, 2017, 05:06:44 PM »
I noticed VanIslander said he posted there.  Anyone else?  I used used to post there under Cohiba. (until I got banned)  ;D

I noticed VanIslander said he posted there.
Only 20,000+ times.  ;D I was a mod for a year or two but couldn't handle all the abuse thrown toward mods by some pretty nasty posters (PM box full of it). I stepped down as mod and a few years later I was ironically banned for openly questioning a mod's decision on the boards (I said my concern in a nice way but had missed the thread that said there would be zero tolerance toward any more criticisms of mods; I couldn't plead my case because they simply banned my account. Oh well, discussion had been becoming less and less useful over the years anyways).

waygook.org has lots of helpful info. It's like ESL Cafe circa 2005 (minus the cowboys, crazies and crass language).

I still check the boards over there. Pretty dead lately. Off topic board has been locked since August last year. Rarely post anymore, here or there.

Korea was so much more fun before internet.

I had a few accounts over there. I always registered with fake personal information. Dave wouldn't activate your account until you e-mailed him your name, address, phone number, and reason for joining. I posted a true story about a foreign teacher at a hagwon attempting to poison her coworkers with drain cleaner in revenge for getting fired. That thread got deleted.

I remember Cohiba's rule being part of the standard advice given to newbies for years.

I've never posted on Dave's ESL, but I've found useful posts there. I also have searched through the job postings there and have spoken with a few recruiters. One was highly dishonest and wanted me to lie about finding a job through a different recruiter so his hagwon could avoid paying the recruiter fee. I balked at this and the guy at this school tried to claim that he had "talked with Dave about me" so the recruiter didn't deserve the fee.

His rule was :::

Remember "Cohiba's Rule" (Now better than ever!):

Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell cuban cigars, European pies, cold
cuts or rye breads. Just to name a few things.

The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.

If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.

This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.

I, unfortunately, live near Seoul where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know!

Above was a quote; not my words.  Above quote from 2008.  Years ago, this rule was true.  Not so much in 2017.

Back then, there were fewer foreigners in the country outside of Seoul.  There were less foreign items to be found, less foreign restaurants, less Koreans who spoke English, etc.  It's changed so quickly in the last 5 years.  Even a lot of the old dumpy buildings have been taken down or have been renovated.  More parks, trees, trails, etc.  Whole country has changed so much.

Anyways, Dave's hasn't been relevant for years.  I was a member there for a while.  Switched to this site.  Hardly posted the last couple of years I was there.  Threads moved so slowly.  Dave also turned into a militant nazi quashing any discussion no explanation given.  It was really hopping in the last decade, when it should have been known as Seoul ESL cafe.  Any questions from here in the provinces largely went unanswered.  No on lived out here.  Any question about Seoul though, big discussion.

Anyways, Dave kicked me off a year or two ago.  No reason given.  Retard.  Anyways, I've used this site mostly by that time anyhow.  I think I might still have an id (same name) on the non Korea boards.  Separate registration.  (Maybe Dave reads this and will kick that one off too.)

Haha, I came up with that rule waaay back then.  Fun is in inverse proportion to
distance from Seoul.  Back then it was true, in my opinion.  I only lived in Incheon
and the difference between Seoul and where I lived was huge.  The rule is not so
applicable now with the exception that most foreign clubs and organizations are
still in Seoul.

Posted there for a couple of years up to 2008, gave advice on contracts, then just gave up.  Sure it was a mod issue or something, but never banned.  Moved to Expatkorea, which was much more fun, more freedom from mods etc.  Stayed there for a few years, but it is now sadly gone.  Although this place is now turning into a massive b****-fest with people feeling the need to attack others.  Ho-hum, I suppose it's the internetz after all.

~6000 posts or something. I stopped going last year after 2016's promised "renovation" failed to happen and the Off Topic board was locked. (Perhaps this was the "renovation"?) Seems like most people have stopped frequenting the place. I miss the days of spliff trolling the Buy & Sell forums and itaewonguy rambling incoherently. They eventually banned almost everyone of interest. I guess it says something about me that I still have my initial account.

I'm surprised by how the site went from one extreme of total openness to becoming downright communist under the same ownership. As another poster said, Dave banned almost all the interesting posters and wound banning his site and himself into irrelevance.

Dave's is (was) a very very very strange place. I say "was" cause haven't been there in years, dunno what it's like now. Probably still strange.
