A few years ago a foreign English teacher did rob a convenience store by emptying the cash register and threatening the staff.

IIRC he was apprehended pretty fast and there were no government retaliations against E-2s.
That was in Gyeongsan too, iirc. Makes me proud to be part of the foreigner population in this fair city (I live in an -eup not too far away)!  :azn:

Kyndo, aren't you a bit of a biker?  How's your Korean? :police:

They probably just gave him the wrong change and he decided to take it to the next level.

If they identified him as a "Foreigner" by his Korean, then his appearnace must have been similar to Koreans.  Again, lumping 99% of the world's population together with a single term is stupid.  Why not use the term "Asian" in this case?

Chinese people and other Asians are by far the majority of the "foreigners" here, yet there's still this idea among waygooks and Koreans that most foreigners here are Westerners, and that most foreigner crime/problems are caused by Westerners.

As seen by the Chinese subway incident, when Asians (non-Koreans) are the victims, they get identified as Chinese, or wherever they come from.  When they transgress, they are referred to as "Foreigners".  When E-2 types do anything at all, good, bad or saintly, they are always foreigners!

An update on the story, according to a Naver news article the police have arrested a 43 year old Korean, sir name 'Kim'. So it turns out it wasn't a foreigner after all (assuming Kim is guilty of course). Sorry the article is in Korean, I expect an English version will be out soon.

If that's the guy they probably should put out an apology. I know they won't but all over the news sites in Korea they were blaming foreigners.

I wonder how the olympics will play out. Will every crime be blamed on foreign citizens because of bad Korean skills?

Sir name KIM when a way hook is caught their full name gets posted ex " Thomas Sydney Thompson the third"

The next year should be a blast here with North Korea, new government and the Olympics.

The prospective new government wants to cut all English teachers! Fuel to the fire blaming foreigners and the homemade gun will scare Koreans.

Korea is going to change drastically after the election!

Let's wait to see if they catch him, which they probably will. I got 만원 says he is on an f4, no offense. Also Koreans can make their own homemade guns without foreigner intervention.

english version here: http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2017/04/22/0200000000AEN20170422004700320.html

so the guy had a 'poor korean accent' and they thought he was a foreigner

this is an example of racial bias and how the korean media can actually damage the reputation of foreigners here. when the media paints foreigners as criminals, if someone comes in and robs a bank the first thought is 'it must be a foreigner'.

Maybe learn British English! It's the old way sir name and sirname are acceptable spellings.
How about favourite, honour, and colour?

Stay on topic! Please!

Anyways the bias towards foreigners is getting out of hand. Couldn't a Korean just speak poorly and throw some English or other language words out there. Thinking about it a Korean who speaks a second language could rob multiple places while speaking poor Korean and the police would be looking for a foreigner.

To the people upset at the assumption of foreigner based on his pronunciation and accent, what are the witnesses supposed to do? Ignore that? That would just be PC stupidity. You certainly take in that information and consider at as a possibility, not a certainty. Some leads and eyewitness statements turn out to be true and valuable bits of information, others are not.

Seems like the Korean police pursued the case properly and didn't start just hounding foreigners or assuming he was a foreigner.

The robber was an "ordinary farmer." He had a regular gun and the bullet was U.S. made and dated back to 1943. He was driven to it by debt, he said.

Maybe household debt in Korea really is a problem.

Seems his Korean wasn't up to snuff or at least not up to the high standards of the bank clerks. He wasn't wearing his old school tie, I guess.

They found him through his bike, which he hadn't done much to hide. I can't decide if that's a positive or a negative for cyclists.

Here are a couple of witnesses being interviewed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt5GsfNcDzA
